Zoonotic Diseases Series # 1: The Skinny on Roundworms

By: Dr. Angela Lehman

What does “zoonotic” mean?

The term “zoonotic” refers to any disease that can be passed from an animal to a human. Certain parasites, bacterial infections, fungal infections, and even viral infections can be transmitted in this way. Although we share our homes, our yards, and sometimes even our beds with our beloved pets, one thing we should NOT be sharing is disease!

One important example of a zoonotic disease, especially in children, is caused by a common internal parasite known as the roundworm.

How do I know if my Reptile is Sick?

Imagine for a moment that you and your pet reptile switched places for a day.  You are now a lizard (or turtle or snake) living in the world's smallest artificial rain forest (or desert perhaps).

Your Pets Oral Health Matters!

Oral Hygiene

Your pet's dental health is a part of his/her healthy foundation. Gingivitis and periodontal disease are a reality for your pet as much as they are for you!
Periodontal disease doesn't just affect your pets teeth, gums and the deterioration of the jaw bone, it impacts their entire general health.
The bacteria that is present with dental disease circulates through the blood stream and can cause damage to the heart, kidneys and liver.

H1N1 and your Pet

 By Kathryn Krueger, DVM

All Creatures would like to provide some information to ease your concerns regarding the H1N1 virus and how it could affect your family pet.

There is no reason to think that the H1N1 influenza virus will cause a pandemic in our companion animals.  Thousands of pets have had apparent exposure to owners with the influenza virus, with very few reported incidents of illness.
